How to prepare a photo for dog tag engraving
For a photo-engraved dog tag, use a clear JPG or PNG with one easily recognizable subject. VeteranTags converts the artwork to a monochrome preview. Laser engraving does not reproduce a full-color photo, and fine details can be lost on a small tag.
1. Choose a clear original image
Use the original photograph rather than a screenshot of a screenshot. Choose a well-lit face or subject with visible details. Avoid blurry pictures, very dark shadows and a crowded background. The upload limit is 5 MB.
2. Upload it to the side you want
Open the tag designer, choose the front or back, and select “Upload a photo.” Use only an image you own or have permission to reproduce. A logo found online is not automatically licensed for engraving.
3. Check the background and contrast
A white background may appear as a rectangle in the preview. Try the background-removal control and inspect the result closely: pale parts of a face, lettering or logo can disappear too. Adjust contrast without removing details you want to keep.
4. Resize, rotate and center the subject
Move the image on the tag and use the size, rotation and centering controls. Keep important details clear of the chain hole and edges. Bigger is not always better if it cuts off part of the subject.
5. Review both sides before checkout
Inspect the monochrome preview and any words you added. Back engraving is included, but you can choose a blank back without changing the price. Two matching tags and a 23-inch chain come with each set.
Will the finished engraving look exactly like my photo?
No. The preview is approximate; the tag finish and laser process affect detail and contrast. Artwork is checked before production. If you are uncertain about a photo, ask VeteranTags before placing the order. Support replies take 3–5 business days.
